Not Receiving Calls — What to Do

If calls are not coming through to your phone or the Romulus app, this guide helps you identify and fix the issue step by step.

If you are expecting calls but not receiving any, the problem is almost always one of the causes listed below. Go through each point in order — in most cases the issue can be resolved quickly.

1. No inbound rule configured

If you have not yet set up an inbound rule for your number, Romulus does not know what to do with incoming calls — so they are not directed anywhere.

How to check: go to Phone Numbers in the side menu, click on your number, and open the Inbound Rules tab. If the list is empty, this is the issue.

How to fix: create an inbound rule that makes your phone ring. See How Inbound Rules Work to get started.

2. The inbound rule does not include your user

A rule is configured, but the Call user block points to a different user, or the group set up in the Call group block does not include you.

How to check: go to Phone Numbers → click on the number → Inbound Rules tab → open the active rule. Check the flow blocks: make sure the Call user block points to you, or that the group in the Call group block includes you as a member.

How to fix: edit the rule and update the block with the correct user or group. Save the changes.

3. Notifications disabled on your phone (mobile)

If you use the Romulus app on a smartphone and calls are not coming through, notifications for the app may be turned off in your phone settings.

How to check: go to your phone's settings, find the Romulus app, and check that notifications are enabled. Also check that your phone is not in Do Not Disturb mode.

How to fix: enable notifications for the Romulus app in your phone settings and turn off any silent or focus modes.

4. The app is being closed in the background (Android)

On some Android devices, the system automatically closes background apps to save battery. This prevents the Romulus app from receiving calls.

How to check: if you received calls in the past but no longer do, and your phone is Android, this is likely the cause.

How to fix: go to your phone settings → find Battery optimisation (or Power saving) → locate the Romulus app → set it to Don't optimise or No restrictions. Restart the app after making the change.

5. No internet connection or unstable connection

The Romulus app needs an active internet connection to receive calls. Without one, it cannot be reached.

How to check: make sure your phone or computer is connected to a WiFi network or has mobile data active. Try opening a web page to confirm the connection is working.

How to fix: restore the connection, then close and reopen the Romulus app to reconnect to the phone system.

6. The desktop app is not open

On a computer, calls only come through if the Romulus app is open and connected. If the app is closed or has a connection issue, calls will not ring.

How to check: make sure the Romulus desktop app is open. Look at the bottom-left corner of the app — if you see an error icon or a connection warning, the app is not connected to the phone system.

How to fix: close and reopen the app. If the issue persists, check your internet connection and try again.
